Genk loose in closing minute.
Sunday 20 Sep 2009 18:32
KRC Genk have lost 1 – 2 to Charleroi on Friday evening. Tözser opened the score for Genk, Christ and Mujangi Bia scored for Charleroi.
Another blow for KRC Genk. After a spicelesss game the home team was left empty handed. Charleroi substitute Mujangi Bia gave them a cold shower in the closing minute. The last home win now dates back to March 21st. Genk were unable to confirm the excellent performance in Bruges.
Expectations were high on Genk’s side. Coach Vanhaezebrouck’s team dominated the game for over half an hour last week in the Jan Breydelstadium and Thomas Buffel’s arrival seemed to give them a breath of fresh air.
But from that promising performance, nothing was left thanks to a well organised Charleroi.
They managed to paralyse wingers Daeseleire and Pudil as well as the attacking triangle Buffel-Barda-Koïta. With a header from Chakouri they were first to threaten. Half way trough the first half a free kick by Guédioura only just went wide.
It was only on minute 26 that Genk were able to retaliate when keeper Chabbert had to go at full stretch to keep out a free kick by Hubert. A goal for the home team would have come as a gift from the gods and fortunately it did. Buffel avoided the offside trap and teed up Koïta, left unmarked in the box. Chabbert had no other option then do bring him down. Referee Hamer didn’t hesitate and pointed to the spot.
Elyaniv Barda, out of shape for the past few weeks, tried to boost his confidence and lined up behind the ball. But his penalty kick was far too weak. Chabbert parried the shot but luckily Tözser was able to score from the rebound.
Ten minutes before halftime Israëli international Elyaniv Barda yet again proved he is not the goalgetter form days gone by anymore. He only had to pick the corner to score in, when he appeared alone in front of Chabbert but his shot went high into the stands.
Five minutes later this miss turned awfully sour when Grégory Christ was allowed too much space to walk through the Genk midfield. He took a shot from 25 metres and found the top right corner. A goal that couldn’t have come at a worse time.
In the second half Charleroi were far more cutting edge and formed an impenetrable block. Buffel tried but he found Chabbert on his path and a shot by Barda bounced wide yet again.Coach Vanhaezebrouck brought on Balazs Toth and Fabien Camus in an attempt to turn the game around. The Hungary international immediately made himself noticed when he placed a back pass by Koïta only just wide. Genk went in search off the winning goal but their game was uninspired. Charleroi did well on the break. First Habibou’s header went over the bar but in the closing minute Mujangi Bia was at the end of an excellent pass from his teammate Habibou. Verhulst had no answer to the young Belgian’s magnificent strike.
Again an expensive loss of points for KRC Genk.
