Five crazy minutes clinch Genk’s first victory in 2008
Saturday 22 Mar 2008 15:08
KRC Genk have picked up the trail to victory again. Against a very defensive Moeskroen Balasz Toth decided the game with a cracking strike in the penultimate minute. The first victory in months pleased everybody.
The Genk fans, chilled to the bone, had to wait three months for this moment. In the closing seconds of the game, Moeskroen, playing with a very negative attitude, finally cracked. It had been since December 14th that KRC Genk clinched the full three points.
Last weekend, the line up with Bosnjak-Barda-Itzhaki looked very promising. Obviously Ronny Van Geneugden acknowledged this and kept his faith in this trio. Nevertheless, Genk weren't very convincing at first. On the contrary, Moeskroen were the first to be dangerous in the game. Tomou turned away from Matoukou but the striker's attempt was parried by Logan Bailly.
The home team responded without delay. A free kick by Balasz Toth was easily caught by goalkeeper Volders. Soon it became obvious that the visitors had travelled to the Cristal Arena for at least one point. Enzo Scifo lined up his team in an ultra defensive system. KRC Genk actually tried to lay out the combinations and attempted to play there way to the Moeskroen goal, but the visiting team had no problem to meet their attacks.
Halfway through the first half, Racing finally broke the deadlock. Israeli Barda was at the receiving end of a magnificent move between Itzhaki and Cornelis and headed home. For Barda this meant his twelfth goal of the season. Finally the Genk train seemed to be back on track. The vice champions dominated the game but they had to be vigilant for the edgy counters by Moeskroen. Again Tomou proved to be dangerous and a shot by Oussalah was only just deflected into corner.
Ten minutes before half time, Baseggio gave the Cristal Arena a very cold shower. The former Anderlecht player cracked a shot from 30 metres out. Logan Bailly had no response. Against the spirit of the game, the equalizer was on the scoreboard.
Crazy with joy.
The home team was clearly shaken. In the second half Genk did their utmost but the blue and whites were unable to break through the Walloon concrete defence. It took an hour before the first opportunity was created. Bertin Tomou made a break away over the right wing. But the Moeskroen striker saw his shot sail way over it's target.
Ronny Van Geneugden saw his team having difficulties trying to impose their will and he brought on some fresh blood with Tom Soetaers, Faris Haroun and shortly before full time with Christian Benteke. A free kick by Soetaers landed on top of the net. The game seemed to slowly run down into a cheerless drawn. And then, shortly before the final whistle, a rebound landed in front of Balasz Toth. The Hungarian didn't hesitate and fired a shot high and dry into the net in the 89th minute. Not even one minute later Barda found himself all alone in the penalty area and he handed Haroun the 3 - 1 on a plate.
Five crazy minutes were enough to offer the home team their first victory in the new year. The outbursts of joy spoke volumes.
As a result Ronny Van Geneugden and his team will be very confident when they travel to the Jan Breydel stadium to take on Club Brugge in next week's top fixture.
