Canada has taken a big step towards the World Cup in Qatar in defeating their 'big neighbour' USA 2-0, after an early goal by Cyle Larin (Besiktas) and another late in stoppage time by Sam Adekugbe (Hatayspor). Iké Ugbo came on for Jonathan David in the 84th minute. Canada had to do without Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies, who is struggling with myocarditis after having contracted COVID-19.
Mark McKenzie did not come off the bench for the US.

With the win, Canada's second-ever place in the World Cup is that much closer. The team has qualified only once before, in Mexico '86. Canada now tops the group by four points over the US and Mexico, who could only draw 0-0 against Costa Rica, with Gerardo Arteaga coming on after an hour.

Overnight from Wednesday to Thursday (our time) will see another round. Canada will play away to El Salvador, the US will host Honduras and Mexico will entertain Panama, the fourth-ranked team in the standings. If each win their match, the top three sides would be all but set and the direct entries into the World Cup sealed, as fourth place will play an intercontinental play-off for a spot in the finals.
