November 23, 2020. A day when football became an afterthought due to the tragic death of Anele Ngcongca. Anele arrived at Genk at the age of 19 as a talented South African and left Limburg eight years later as a legend. As the undisputed leader and sometimes even as a cheerful captain, Anele was part of our team that won the Belgian Cup in 2009 and 2013 and captured the title in 2011.

In total, 'Jongie' played in blue and white 279 times. Only Thomas Buffel has managed to collect more appearances for Genk. He played every time with the same passion for football, and occasionally with a bit of spirited celebration. He was also able to put the game into perspective, in a philosophical way, but we never thought he would show us that it would become quite so relative on that one black day. We will always remember him as a great player, a wonderful person and a very great Genkie.

On October 21, Anele would have turned 36 years old. In his memory, the jersey he wore during the 2011 championship match will now be on display at goalmine. Be sure to come and honour our club icon.
