KRC Genk and Matte Smets will continue their journey together. The 22-year-old defender has signed a new contract at the Cegeka Arena until 2030.
Over the past few seasons, Smets has made significant strides. Defensively, he has established himself as a key figure at the heart of our back line. On the ball, he is equally influential, combining composure with an excellent passing range and outstanding technical ability. As a result, he plays a vital role in building attacks from the back. Physically, too, he has developed remarkably, missing hardly any minutes throughout last season.
“Matte is much more than just a central defender. He is a natural leader. Someone who takes responsibility. Someone who works hard every single day. Someone who sets high standards for himself and his teammates. A true professional. A role model for many,” says Head of Football Dimitri de Condé.
Matte is one of our own. Developed in blue and white, shaped on our training pitches and now a cornerstone of Genk's defence. A player who understands what this club means to Limburg. Despite interest from abroad, Smets has chosen to commit his future to KRC Genk.
“It has always been a childhood dream to progress through the academy, reach the first team and play at the Cegeka Arena,” says Matte Smets. “KRC Genk feels like a second home to me. I feel truly appreciated here. I know what this club means to the region. I want to take responsibility. I want to embrace my role as the leader of the defence, give everything in every match and enjoy a successful season together with our supporters. My ambition is clear: I want to take the next step in my career by winning trophies. To achieve that, we have to keep working hard every single day.”
The entire Genk family wishes Matte every success in the seasons ahead.
