After Branko Strupar and Wesley Sonck, Paul Onuachu is the third KRC Genk player to win the Golden Shoe; our Nigerian striker finished ahead of Club Brugge players Noa Lang and Charles De Ketelaere.
2021 was an incredible year for Paul: he finished top scorer, won the Belgian Cup, was vice-champion of the Jupiler Pro League and was crowned professional footballer of the year. And now, he has also won the Golden Shoe. He is a legend, our legend; this is something that needs no further explanation.
Junya Ito also made an impression at the 68th Golden Shoe ceremony. His goal against Club Brugge was nominated as 'Goal of the Year', but Noa Lang walked away with the award, before our Japanese winger finished fifth in the Golden Boot voting.
Romelu Lukaku was voted the Best Belgian Playing Abroad, but five products from our club’s academy were in the top 10 for this prize: Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, Yannick Carrasco, Leandro Trossard and Koen Casteels. What an achievement!
The Golden Shoe (with two Genk players in the top five) and further evidence of our fine academy: it was a wonderful evening for our club. Let them talk; that way they won't see us coming.
