For the trip to the Ghelamco Arena in Ghent, Wouter Vrancken could again count on McKenzie and Cuesta in the centre of defence. Samatta took a place in attack, while newcomer Tolu started on the bench.
First half
With both teams wanting to play football, it promised to be an engaging evening. After a tentative start, the first chance was immediately taken. Cuypers played in Hong, who left Vandevoordt without a chance. Barely ten minutes later, the match was already level again when Hrosovsky found Painstil with a wonderful deep ball and the latter rounded the Ghent goalkeeper before finishing with a beautifully controlled goal. After the equalizer Genk gradually took control of the match, without being really threatening. Vandevooroordt had to be alert one more time on a cunning ball over the top of the defence, and it was 1-1 at halftime after an open first half.
Second half
The Buffalos came out of the dressing room sharpest with two chances in short order. At the other end, Paintsil was able to shoot from range, but his shot lacked direction. Just as in the first half, most of the ball possession was in favour of our Genkies, but without being able to be really threatening. Just past the hour Sor and Tolu replaced El Khannouss and Samatta. Less than two minutes later, assist king Mike Trésor dropped the ball nicely onto Sor's head, and he gave us a 1-2 lead. Ghent had to come from behind and left themselves open at the back. In the 86th minute Tolu took advantage of his first minutes on the pitch by making it 1-3 from Castro's pass. It then became a thrilling end to the match, as Depoitre scored to make it 2-3 just before full time. But in the end, the three points went back to Limburg. Next Sunday, another top match is on the horizon as our boys will host Antwerp in another table-topper.
