In the summer of 2019, Onuachu came to Cegeka Arena. 134 official matches later, the affable Nigerian has left a beautiful legacy at our club.
He managed to score 84 times for our first team.
In the 2020-2021 season he guided us to a Belgian Cup, and, with 33 goals, he received the prize of professional football player of the year and the Golden Shoe as the best player in Belgium.

With his impressive stature in combination with good footwork and a tremendous work ethic without the ball, Onuachu has emerged in recent years as one of the absolute lynchpins of our first team.

Not surprised

It was no secret that Onuachu had long dreamed of playing in the Premier League; the club no longer wanted to deny him that dream.

“He reiterated that dream today during a long conversation. We could no longer stop him from making his dream come true. I am pleased that Paul is also grateful to the club for that,” said Head of Football Dimitri de Condé. “His departure is of course a great loss for our current team. We shouldn't be cavalier about that. But we were prepared for a possible departure,” de Condé reassures the fans.

A personal farewell

Onuachu himself said goodbye to the supporters in a personal video message on social media. “I want to thank everyone who has helped me grow here. The different coaches, the technical staff and of course the supporters. I wish the club the best for the future. It is my greatest wish that they can win the title. Genk will always be my home, wherever I go”, said a clearly emotional Onuachu.

The entire Genk family would like to thank Paul for the wonderful years and the unique moments he has given to the Genk supporters. He leaves the club having won the Belgian Cup, the Golden and Ebony Shoes and a top scorer title.

The club and Paul are looking for a moment together to give him a proper farewell in the presence of all the supporters at the Cegeka Arena.
