First half

With an average age of 16, Reenaers' boys were still the youngest team in the entire Youth League competition a month ago. A month later, the Genk coach would opt for more experience in his starting line-up with five substitutions. Lazar, Manguelle and Camara, among others, had to make the difference with their experience from the Challenger Pro League. The first half would play out almost entirely in the Hungarians' half. Only rarely would they get out from under the dominant Genk pressure. More animosity played out in front of visiting goalkeeper Lehoczki's cage. An industrious De Wannemacker - he turns 16 on Christmas Day - dictated the law. With a delightful cross, he sent Rabhi down the flank who found Lazar on the opposite side. His volley was stranded on a Hungarian back. The De Wannemacker would also find Camara and Cauwel in the 16. Both headers went wide. The question was not if, but when the stiff Hungarian wall would break. On the stroke of half-time, De Wannemacker rewarded his strong first half with an absolute world goal. After a rehearsed number on a corner, he popped the leather from about 20 metres unmistakably into the far cross. 1-0 and all to redo in the second half.

Second half

The visiting left-back saw stars against Lazar. Entering the second half, he fouled heavily for the second time. Second yellow and the visitors another half with one less. With a man more, our boys retained the upper hand. Lazar again showed his flashes on the left. Rabhi was a toe short of pushing the double lead against the nets. The Genk attacking waves kept coming next. Mocsnkik infiltrated the 16 where he was wrongly stopped. Penalty was the logical verdict. A breeze for De Wannemacker who signed for his second of the evening. Our boys were virtually in the next round. A little later, the egg stood so after 3-0. After a classy flash, Camara secluded De Wannemacker around the small rectangle who deviated narrowly wide. A hat-trick was not granted to the Genk tastemaker. Trailing 2-1, the visitors had to come. And they did. After a rehearsed number, Vékony left Brughmans hopeless. All to be redone. Even before Bouazzaoui was sent off with his second yellow in the 90th minute, Cauwel had two chances in the final minutes to put us back on top. Penalties would decide overwintering.

Penalties

In a blood-curdling penalty series, neither team failed once in the first five penalties. With the score tied, any slip would then be fatal. The visiting goalkeeper then chose the right corner on Rabhi's effort, but Varga did not subsequently fail and so, despite a strong performance, the Genk U19's UEFA Youth League adventure is unfortunately over.
