Our very own Ibrahima Sory Bangoura has earned a spot in an elite ranking of defensive midfielders under the age of 23, featuring players from some of the world's biggest clubs. The renowned CIES Football Observatory has compiled various statistical tables using advanced technical data to compare players globally across different aspects of the game. One of these aspects is ground defence—which evaluates duels, interceptions, and anticipation. In this category, Bangoura impressively ranks third among all U23 players worldwide, trailing only Rocco Reitz (Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Marc Casadó (FC Barcelona).

Among Belgium’s Most Promising Midfielders

Following him on the list are global stars such as Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool FC), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Pedri (FC Barcelona), and Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid). His presence among such esteemed names highlights his status as one of the most promising defensive midfielders in Belgium.

Ibrahima made the move from Johnson Académie in his home country, Guinea, to the Jos Vaessen Talent Academy in 2022. Last season, he established himself as a key figure in Jong Genk’s midfield, making nearly 50 appearances in the Challenger Pro League. During last season’s Champions’ Play-offs, he got a taste of the highest level of football. This year, at just 21 years old, the Guinean has made the permanent step up to the first team, adapting seamlessly. Coach Fink has already stated on multiple occasions that Ibra is one of the players who has impressed him the most this season.

His consistently strong performances are now backed by statistical recognition—a well-deserved achievement for him and a testament to our club’s outstanding scouting, both domestically and internationally.
